The upside is that I’ve never really viewed technology as something that was magic.
(That blog entry is worth reading, especially if you're considering an iPad.)
That statement strongly resonated within me, primarily because as a young MS-DOS programmer, I (thought that I) could understand everything within the system in front of me. MS-DOS was simple enough for that. For every program that Microsoft or the other biggies could create, I could figure out what they had done and always thought I could replicate it. That feeling has carried forward and stood me in good stead in many other spheres as well.
Unfortunately, I often get the feeling now that a whole generation of computer users have grown up treating the computer as an appliance to be used. No longer do I see young kids programming computers. And that is sad.
